Forgiveness…The Defining Characteristic of Peace

I often refer to forgiveness as the single most important characteristic that defines us as human beings.

I remember when I was 16, preparing for our big set of exams at school…I was sitting at my PC and had just printed out this paper on forgiveness. It was all about the healing and freeing power of forgiveness. I really bought into the argument so I decided to try it out.

So I began by forgiving all the things in my environment that we irritating me. I’m referring to inanimate objects by the way. Then I forgave all the evil people at school and in the schooling system for making me have to write exams. I really disliked them for stopping me from being outside playing tennis…but hey, I chose to forgive them. Then I forgave the weather for being bad…me for being lazy, and my grandfather’s car was taking so long to start.

As we drove along, even though I didn’t have any negative feeling towards my grandfather (in fact we were very close)…I decided to forgive him for anything he may have EVER done to ever rub me the wrong way. That felt really good. Then I forgave him for anything he may ever do in the future. That felt even better.

Then something clicked in my head. I realized that I felt amazing in that moment…and even if something “bad” were to happen in the future, I forgive it/them/her/him…it was irrelevant, they were already forgiven. I felt a sense of unshakable peace – it lasted for about 12-15 minutes…but damn it was good.

Buddhists refer to this as a moment of satori – a little mini awakening. It’s fun, and freeing.

Go ahead…give it a try.
